AI agents aren’t recommending your products? Here’s how to boost the visibility of your Magento online store
Imagine a personal shopper browsing your online store on behalf of your customer. He’s in a hurry, reads only what’s written in black and white, and skips over anything he doesn’t understand. That’s how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude review a product page before recommending your online store.
That AI personal shopper is bringing in more and more customers. Adobe reports that traffic from AI assistants to U.S. retail sites grew by 393 percent in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier. Visitors who arrived via an AI recommendation converted 42 percent better in March 2026 than visitors from other channels.
In this article, you’ll learn why many Magento online stores are difficult for AI assistants to read, what you can do about it, how much it costs, and when it’s better to wait a little longer.
Why don’t AI agents recommend my Magento online store?
AI agents such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity rarely recommend a Magento online store if the product information is buried among menus, scripts, and formatting. Adobe reports that product pages in the U.S. retail sector score an average of 66 percent on machine readability. This means that approximately one-third of a product page’s content is not properly processed by an AI crawler.
For the AI personal shopper, this creates uncertainty. It sees a price but doesn’t know whether it’s the sale price or the list price. It sees a stock number but can’t link it to the correct product variant. When in doubt, an AI assistant would rather recommend a store where that information is clear.
A second cause is access. Some online stores block crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Perplexity via robots.txt or their firewall, often without the owner’s knowledge. Check your robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot to rule this out.
A third factor lies outside your online store. AI assistants also take into account reviews, price, and mentions on other sites. A perfectly readable product page rarely beats a competitor with thousands of good reviews.
Why don’t I see AI traffic in Google Analytics?
AI traffic is largely excluded from Google Analytics because AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, so the analytics tag is never triggered. Furthermore, visitors who click through from ChatGPT or Perplexity often arrive without a referrer. Those visits are categorized as direct traffic.
As a result, an online store owner usually doesn’t know which AI assistant is reading their catalog, how many customers are coming in via AI, or what they’re ordering. Without those figures, any investment in AI visibility is a gamble.
It is possible to measure AI traffic, both on the server and during the ordering process. You can identify crawler visits by the user agent in your server logs. You can identify click-throughs partly by the referrer (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai) or by the parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com that ChatGPT adds to links. If you link that source to the order at checkout, you can see the results per assistant, even if the customer’s browser blocks trackers.
What steps do you need to take to make your Magento online store readable by AI?
A Magento online store becomes readable by AI assistants through four components: an llms.txt file, Markdown versions of your pages, structured data, and measurement.
What is llms.txt and what do you put in it?
llms.txt is a text file in your site’s root directory, following the standard set by llmstxt.org, that tells AI assistants what you sell and which pages matter. For an online store, this should include your main categories, along with the number of products and price range, plus your bestsellers and your shipping and return policies. It’s a new standard, so not every AI provider can read the file yet.
Why have a Markdown version of your product pages?
A Markdown version of a product page displays the title, SKU, price, inventory, specifications, and description without menus or scripts. An AI crawler then doesn’t have to guess what the main content is. Give those versions a “noindex” label, and Google will continue to index your regular page without the risk of duplicate content.
What structured data does an online store need for AI?
Structured data according to schema.org (JSON-LD) tells an AI assistant, through fixed fields, what a page contains. An online store requires at least a “Product” with price, inventory, and reviews; “ItemList” for categories; “Organization” and “WebSite” on every page; and “FAQPage” for frequently asked questions. With this data, an assistant can answer a question like “Does this store ship to Belgium?” using your own information.
How do you measure the value delivered by AI assistants?
An AI attribution dashboard shows, for each assistant, the number of crawler visits, click-throughs, orders, revenue, and conversion. Always compare the current 30-day period with the previous 30 days, as individual measurements fluctuate. This is because asking ChatGPT the same question does not always yield the same answer.
Build it yourself or use a module?
You can have the four components custom-built or install them as modules. Factor Blue developed the AI Visibility Suite for this purpose—four Magento modules that can each be enabled or disabled separately and per store view.
When does AI visibility not make sense for your online store?
Investing in AI visibility yields little return in five situations. If you recognize yourself in any of these, you’d be better off spending that budget elsewhere first.
- Your product data isn’t in order yet. Missing specifications, sparse descriptions, or incorrect inventory levels will only become more quickly visible to AI with an llms.txt file. Start by addressing your product information or PIM.
- You are running an older version of Magento. Most modules require a recent Magento 2.4 release with an up-to-date version of PHP. An upgrade is therefore recommended.
- You primarily sell through quotes or account managers. In B2B, where customer-specific prices are hidden behind a login, an AI crawler won’t see your prices anyway, so the benefit is limited to the discoverability of your product range.
- You’re looking for a guarantee. No module guarantees a listing in ChatGPT, because product selection, price, reviews, and listings elsewhere carry at least as much weight.
How much does AI visibility cost for a Magento online store?
AI visibility for a Magento online store costs a fixed monthly fee plus a one-time installation fee when using a ready-made module. Custom solutions require upfront development time and ongoing maintenance whenever an AI provider or standard changes.
The AI Visibility Suite costs €99 per month or €1,099 per year, excluding VAT, per online store.
An unlimited number of store views is included with that license.
Installation and configuration incur a one-time fee ranging from €500 to €1,200, depending on the front-end architecture.
The implementation takes place in four steps:
- An AI readiness scan on the staging environment, which measures how well AI assistants can currently read the store.
- Configuration: which categories and products are included in the llms.txt file, which specifications appear on the Markdown pages, and which company data is included in the structured data.
- Launched on the production environment, verified using Google’s and schema.org’s validators.
- Measurement from day one: crawler visits, AI click-throughs, and orders per period.
Frequently Asked Questions About AI Visibility for Magento
What is AI visibility for an online store?
AI visibility refers to the extent to which AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude can read, understand, and recommend a web store’s products. It is also known as GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization).
How do I ensure my Magento online store appears in ChatGPT?
A Magento online store appears more frequently in ChatGPT if OpenAI’s crawlers are allowed to visit the site and the product data is machine-readable via llms.txt, Markdown pages, and schema.org structured data. There is no guarantee of inclusion, as ChatGPT also takes into account product range, reviews, and mentions on other sites.
Does my online store need an llms.txt file?
An online store with many categories benefits from an llms.txt file, as it enables AI tools to find the right products and policy pages more quickly. llms.txt is a new standard that is not yet supported by every AI provider, so it complements structured data rather than replacing it.
Can I see how much revenue ChatGPT generates?
Yes, if the AI source is linked to the order during checkout. An AI attribution dashboard at Magento then displays sessions, orders, revenue, average order value, and conversion rate per assistant, typically with a 30-day attribution window.
Do Markdown pages or llms.txt files harm my Google rankings?
No, provided the Markdown versions are labeled with “noindex.” Google will then only index your regular product page and will not treat the Markdown version as duplicate content.
Does AI visibility work with Hyvä and Adobe Commerce?
AI visibility modules generally work with or without the Hyvä theme, since llms.txt, Markdown, and JSON-LD are generated separately from the front end. The AI Visibility Suite requires Magento 2.4.9 with PHP 8.3 through 8.5; for Adobe Commerce, the installation is customized on a per-project basis.
Is measuring AI traffic GDPR-compliant?
AI attribution can be GDPR-compliant if no IP addresses are stored and the cookie is first-party. Such a cookie then contains only the AI source, timestamps, the landing page, and a random session number, without a name or email address.
How quickly do AI assistants pick up on changes in my online store?
How quickly AI assistants pick up on changes varies by provider and is unpredictable. Therefore, start tracking crawler visits and click-throughs as soon as the site goes live, and compare each 30-day period with the previous one.
