Magento Product Configurator

Factor Blue builds your product configurator, which makes the ordering process for complex and customizable products intuitive—from simple step-by-step selections to real-time 3D visualizations.

//01 — When do you need a product configurator?

A configurator leads to more orders.

Not every product can be sold using a dropdown menu with five options. Furniture that customers customize with their own colors and dimensions.

Technical products where the combination of parts determines whether the whole thing works. These are products where a configurator makes the difference between a customer who abandons the purchase and one who orders with confidence.

A good configurator reduces the return rate—customers receive exactly what they’ve put together—and increases conversion rates for products that are typically sold by sales representatives or over the phone.

The customer selects their color, size, configuration, or type of print and immediately sees the result.

We build configurators that are fully integrated with the Magento catalog, calculate prices in real time, and add items directly to the shopping cart with all specifications.

Our work is supported by a strong network of technical partners, complemented by expertise in e-commerce and technology that we continuously develop and refine.

//02 — What modules do we build?

Four types of configurators we build

The type of configurator that’s right for you depends on your product, your target audience, and the level of confidence customers need to place an order.

Step-by-step configurator

The customer goes through a structured series of choices: model, color, material, size, options. Each step filters the next based on compatibility. Suitable for products with clear option trees where not every combination is valid. Result: a clear overview of the configuration before placing an order.

Visual 2D configurator

The product image updates in real time as the customer makes a selection. Choose a different color, and you’ll see the chair in that color. Add a logo, and you’ll see it on the product. Ideal for fashion, workwear, printed materials, packaging, and products where the customer experience drives the purchase decision.

Visual 3D configurator

A fully three-dimensional product in the browser, rendered using WebGL and Three.js. The customer can rotate the product, view it from every angle, and see materials and textures change in real time.

Ideal for furniture, kitchens, and premium products where the customer really wants to see the product before purchasing.

CPQ configurators

For complex B2B products where the price depends on the full configuration and direct ordering is not the appropriate end point.

The customer configures the product, sees a real-time price estimate based on their selections, and submits a quote request with all specifications. The configuration is forwarded to the sales team.

//04 — Factor Blue

Why choose Factor Blue for a product configurator?

Specifications Before Code

We start by drafting a technical specification. This prevents the scope from expanding halfway through the project and ensures you don’t end up paying for work that wasn’t requested.

15 years of industry expertise

We know the ins and outs: large product catalogs, pricing and inventory logic for B2B and B2C, and data that has to be accurate. You don’t need to explain your market to us.

Direct communication, no interference

You’ll work directly with the developers. Honest feedback, clear agreements, and no surprises down the road.

Not just a time-billing agency, but a partnership

We help shape the roadmap, not just address today’s issues. Code that grows with your business instead of getting in your way later on.

//05 — Customer Feedback

Real customer experiences

Choosing a new technical partner isn’t something you do lightly. That’s why we let our clients and partners share their experiences working with us.

TELL US WHAT'S GOING ON

We’re the technical team that lies awake at night worrying about your uptime, your performance, and your next steps. Not as a contractor. Not as a supplier. But as the people who have just as much at stake in your success as you do.

You tell us what’s going on; we’ll tell you what we see.

//07 — Our Approach

From the initial consultation to
configurator

01.

Discovery

We start by mapping out your product options, compatibility rules, and pricing logic. The more complex the option tree, the more important it is to document it thoroughly before building anything. Together, we’ll determine which type of configurator best suits your product and target audience.

02.

Design & Planning

Based on the analysis, we design the configurator flow: which steps, in what order, and with what dependencies. UX is key—a configurator that’s technically sound but confuses users simply won’t work. You approve the design before development begins.

03.

Development & Testing

Our team builds the configurator and fully integrates it with Magento: product catalog, price calculation, shopping cart, and any integration with an ERP system or quote module. For 3D configurators, we also provide the technical specifications for the 3D models.

04.

Launch

We test all option combinations, price calculations, and edge cases. On mobile devices, we test responsiveness, and for 3D configurators, we test load time and rendering performance. The configurator does not go live until it works flawlessly.

05.

Management & Further Development

Products change, options are expanded, and prices are adjusted. We manage the configurator after it goes live or provide the documentation so your team can make changes on its own.

//08 — Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions
about product configurators

Frequently Asked Questions. Can’t find your question here? We’d be happy to answer it personally.

01. How much does a Magento product configurator cost?

The cost depends heavily on the type and complexity. A step-by-step configurator with a clear option tree typically starts at around €8,000 to €15,000.

A visual 2D configurator with real-time product images costs more, depending on the number of combinations to be rendered.

A 3D configurator with WebGL rendering and AR functionality is a substantial project; expect to pay between €20,000 and €60,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the 3D models and option trees. We always provide a detailed scope of work after an initial consultation.

We build the configurator ourselves. You provide the 3D models of your products in a standard format such as GLTF, OBJ, or FBX, or you can have them created by a specialized 3D modeling company.

We advise on the technical requirements the models must meet and collaborate with your 3D vendor as needed.

Don’t have 3D models yet? We’ll help you find the right partner.

Yes. We integrate the configurator with Magento’s pricing logic, including customer group-specific prices and volume discounts, or retrieve prices in real time from the online store or an ERP system.

For B2B projects where orders aren’t placed immediately, we build a CPQ workflow: the customer configures the product, the price is calculated based on the configuration, and the result is submitted as a quote request with all specifications fully documented.

The configurator we build for you belongs to you. You’ll receive the full source code, with no license fees and no dependency on Factor Blue. You can have the configurator managed by us or by another team—the code is well-documented and transferable.

In some cases, we offer a co-investment model. If a configurator type is generic enough—such as a step-by-step configurator framework or a 3D viewer without product-specific logic—we can co-invest in its development.

Factor Blue will then cover a portion of the development costs, you pay less, and we retain the right to use the foundation for other clients as well. The product-specific option trees, pricing logic, and 3D models will always remain exclusively yours.

We’ll discuss whether a configurator qualifies for co-investment during the analysis.
