Agentic commerce: AI agents that shop for you

Agentic commerce is the next major shift in e-commerce: AI agents that handle the entire purchasing process on behalf of a consumer, from product research and comparison to ordering and payment.

//01 — What is agentic commerce?

The End of the Traditional Customer Journey

Agentic commerce is fundamentally changing online shopping. An AI agent receives a task—“order the running shoes that match my training schedule and can be delivered this weekend for less than €120”—and handles that task independently. The agent searches, compares, selects, and purchases.

This isn’t just a pipe dream. OpenAI describes it as: “ChatGPT not only helps you find what you want to buy—it also helps you buy it.” ChatGPT Instant Checkout has been live in the United States since late 2025 and serves 900 million weekly users.

In January 2026, Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard that enables AI agents to communicate with product catalogs and complete purchases.

The way AI agents shop differs fundamentally from how humans do. They do not navigate through online store pages. Instead, they communicate directly with structured APIs and data feeds to access product data, prices, inventory levels, and delivery options. An online store that does not expose its data correctly and completely via the appropriate protocols simply does not exist for an AI agent.

Our work is supported by a strong network of technical partners, complemented by expertise in e-commerce and technology that we continuously develop and refine.

//02 — Agentic Commerce: How does it work?

AI agents make purchases based on your data

Model Context Protocol (MCP)

The Model Context Protocol, developed by Anthropic and now widely adopted, is the standard by which AI agents communicate with external systems.

A Magento online store with a properly configured MCP server is immediately accessible to any AI agent that supports the protocol, including Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot.

Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)

Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol is the open standard that allows AI agents from various platforms to interact with merchant catalogs.

Online stores that support UCP can be discovered and purchased through all AI agents that use the protocol, without the customer ever having to open a browser.

Structured product data

AI agents select products based on structured data: attributes, specifications, dimensions, materials, availability, and price. A product without complete attributes is not selected—not because the agent is unfamiliar with the online store, but because the agent cannot answer the query.

Secure transactions

Agentic commerce requires a checkout process that can be handled by an AI agent without human intervention. This places specific demands on how the checkout is structured, how payment is initiated, and how order confirmation is processed.

//04 — Why?

Why Choose Agentic Commerce with Factor Blue?

Specialization

Not a general-purpose agency that dabbles in everything, but specialists who truly solve your complex challenges.

15 years of industry expertise

We know the ins and outs: large product catalogs, pricing and inventory logic for B2B and B2C, and data that has to be accurate. You don’t need to explain your market to us.

Direct communication, no interference

You’ll work directly with the developers. Honest feedback, clear agreements, and no surprises down the road.

Not just a time-billing agency, but a partnership

We help shape the roadmap, not just address today’s issues. Code that grows with your business instead of getting in your way later on.

//05 — Customer Feedback

Real customer experiences

Choosing a new technical partner isn’t something you do lightly. That’s why we let our clients and partners share their experiences working with us.

TELL US WHAT'S GOING ON

We’re the technical team that lies awake at night worrying about your uptime, your performance, and your next steps. Not as a contractor. Not as a supplier. But as the people who have just as much at stake in your success as you do.

You tell us what’s going on; we’ll tell you what we see.

//07 — Our Approach

From preparation today
to agentic commerce tomorrow

01.

Agentic Readiness Audit

We assess your online store’s current readiness for agentic commerce: how complete is the product data, is the MCP server configurable, how is the structured data implemented, and what checkout adjustments are needed. You’ll get a clear picture of what’s already in place and what still needs to be done.

02.

Supplementing product data

Based on the audit, we supplement the product data. Missing attributes, inconsistent category structures, incomplete descriptions—we address these issues systematically so that AI agents can fully evaluate and select your products.

03.

MCP server & structured data

We configure the MCP server, optimize the schema.org implementation, and ensure that your online store communicates correctly via the protocols used by AI agents. This immediately adds value for current AI search engines and lays the foundation for agentic transactions.

04.

Transaction Architecture

We assess the checkout process for agent compatibility and prepare the necessary adjustments as soon as the European agentic checkout becomes available. This ensures that the technical implementation will take only weeks, not months.

05.

Monitoring & early access

We actively monitor the availability of agentic commerce channels across Europe and will let you know as soon as implementation is possible. You’ll be among the first to know when the time comes.

//08 — Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions
about agentic commerce

Frequently Asked Questions. Can’t find your question here? We’d be happy to answer it personally.

01. Why isn’t agentic commerce live in Europe yet?

In Europe, agentic commerce—in the form of full transactions conducted via AI agents—is not yet available to consumers.

Payments in Europe are subject to PSD2 and the upcoming PSD3, which impose stricter guidelines for strong customer authentication than those in the U.S.

An AI agent that initiates a payment on behalf of a consumer must meet those authentication requirements. The technical and legal details of this are still being developed.

At the same time, GDPR and consumer protection laws impose additional requirements on how AI agents may handle personal data and how consent for transactions is documented.

ChatGPT Instant Checkout is on a waitlist for countries outside the U.S. In the spring of 2026, Mastercard processed the first live agentic transactions in Asian markets, indicating that the rollout outside the U.S. has begun. Europe will follow. The question is not if it’s coming, but when.

The preparatory work that can be done now—structured product data, MCP server configuration, UCP compatibility, and agent-friendly checkout architecture—is exactly what Factor Blue is doing right now.

This ensures you’ll be ready on day one of European availability, rather than falling months behind.

An AI chatbot answers questions and helps customers find information, but the customer still makes the purchase themselves.

Agentic commerce takes it a step further: an AI agent handles the entire purchasing process on behalf of the consumer. The agent interprets a request in natural language, searches through available products, compares them based on the specified criteria, selects the best product, and completes the purchase, including payment and order confirmation.

The customer issues a request and receives a confirmation. The agent handles everything in between independently. This requires a fundamentally different technical infrastructure than a chatbot: structured API access to the catalog, inventory, pricing, and checkout, rather than a conversational interface.

The preparation for agentic commerce—complete product data, proper schema.org implementation, and MCP server configuration—is the same infrastructure that’s already improving your visibility in AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

You’re investing in something that’s already paying off while simultaneously preparing for what’s to come.

Online stores that wait until agentic commerce goes live in Europe will fall months behind in implementation compared to competitors who are prepared now. The technical adjustments are no small matter—those who start early have a structural advantage.

For B2B, agentic commerce may have an even more profound impact than for B2C.

Corporate buyers spend a significant portion of their time on routine orders for the same office supplies, raw materials, and parts that are reordered every month or week. An AI agent can fully automate these repeat purchases: it checks inventory, compares the price to the contract price, places the order, and processes the order confirmation without the buyer ever having to log in.

Magento excels at B2B functionality: customer-specific price lists, order approval workflows, account management, and minimum order quantities. This B2B logic must be correctly exposed via the MCP server so that AI agents can utilize it. Factor Blue combines B2B Magento expertise with agentic commerce preparation to ensure that even complex B2B scenarios function correctly as AI agents take over these processes.

That’s a valid question and one of the most discussed points of contention surrounding agentic commerce.

When an AI agent handles the purchase, direct interaction between the customer and the online store largely disappears from the purchasing experience. The customer no longer experiences your brand through your product page or checkout process. They experience only the product itself and the post-purchase process.

This places different demands on where you, as a brand, invest: product data and attributes become the new storefront, delivery time and the returns experience become the new brand experience, and reviews and reputation become the primary reason why an agent chooses your product over a competitor’s.

At the same time, agentic commerce offers a new type of loyalty: a customer who instructs an agent to always buy from you, or a B2B buyer who configures your online store as a default supplier in their AI agent, is a customer who is highly unlikely to switch.

The balance is shifting, but control isn’t disappearing—it’s simply shifting to other touchpoints.
