Migrating to Magento from your current platform
There comes a time when your current e-commerce platform no longer meets your needs, and migrating to Magento is the logical next step. Factor Blue guides you through the entire replatforming process: from platform consulting and migration planning to data migration.
//01 — When should you migrate to Magento?
For those for whom it’s the right fit, there’s no better platform than Magento.
Magento is the most robust open-source e-commerce platform for organizations with complex requirements. B2B functionality such as customer-specific pricing and account management, advanced catalog rules, multiple stores managed from a single interface, and in-depth customization options—Magento offers capabilities that other platforms lack. However, this does come with higher development and management costs.
Many organizations come to us from Shopify, WooCommerce, Lightspeed, Shopware, or a fully custom-built platform. Shopify reaches its limits as soon as B2B functionality, complex checkout logic, or deep API integrations are required.
WooCommerce scales poorly with larger product catalogs or higher order volumes. Custom-built platforms incur disproportionately high maintenance costs and eventually become a hindrance to further development. If any of these situations sound familiar, it’s worth discussing Magento with us.
We always start with an honest consultation. If Magento isn’t the right choice for your situation, we’ll tell you so—even if that means we won’t take on the project.
Our work is supported by a strong network of technical partners, complemented by expertise in e-commerce and technology that we continuously develop and refine.
//02 — What does a migration to Magento involve?
Replatforming is more than just technology
When switching to a new e-commerce platform, it’s important to follow the right process and have the support you need to make the right decisions.
Migrate all data
All existing data is transferred: products, categories, customer accounts, order history, CMS pages, and content. We perform the migration in a structured manner and validate after migration to ensure the data has been transferred completely and correctly. A replatforming is not a time to leave data behind—it’s a time to organize it.
Design & Frontend
A migration is the ideal time to revamp the front end as well. Factor Blue builds on Hyvä by default—the modern Magento front-end framework that loads three to five times faster. Hyvä improves your Core Web Vitals, your Google ranking, and your conversion rate. We’ll build a new design that aligns with your brand, or migrate an existing design to the Hyvä architecture.
Setting up integrations
Your ERP integration, PIM integration, marketing tools, and payment solutions will be migrated to the new platform. We’ll take stock of all existing integrations and rebuild them to be better documented, more stable, and ready for Magento’s scale. We’ll immediately address any integrations that didn’t work properly on the old platform.
SEO retention and redirects
A migration without an SEO strategy is a migration that results in traffic loss. We create a complete URL mapping, set up 301 redirects for every existing URL, and verify that metadata, structured data, and crawlability are correctly configured after going live. We prefer to do this in collaboration with your marketing agency or can recommend specialists to assist you.
From the moment you start working with us, we take full responsibility for your online store. We ensure that everything is set up optimally, and our goal is to leave your store in better shape than when we first took it on.

//07 — Our Approach
From the initial consultation
to the launch of your online store
Platform Consulting
We start with a thorough analysis of your current platform, your requirements, and your goals. Based on that, we advise you on whether Magento is the right choice, which version suits your situation, and what the scope of the migration is. We map out all the data, integrations, and functionality to be migrated.
Migration Planning
We create a detailed plan: when each component will be built, when data will be migrated, and when each integration will be delivered. We design the Magento architecture—including the front end on Hyvä, extension selections, and the integration approach—before we begin building.
Build, Migrate & Integrate
We build the new Magento environment, migrate the data, and set up the integrations. We work in iterations so you can review our progress along the way and provide feedback.
Testing & SEO Preparation
We test the entire environment for functionality, data integrity, performance, and SEO. URL mappings and redirects are set up and validated. We verify that all critical workflows are functioning properly: from product search to order confirmation.
Launch
We go live at a scheduled time with minimal downtime. Immediately after going live, we actively monitor the online store, the integrations, and organic traffic. Any issues are addressed the same day.
//08 — Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
about migrating to Magento
Frequently Asked Questions. Can’t find your question here? We’d be happy to answer it personally.
01. How long does a migration to Magento take?
A migration to Magento takes an average of three to six months, depending on the complexity of the current platform, the amount of data to be migrated, the number of integrations to be rebuilt, and the scope of the desired functionality.
A simpler migration from WooCommerce with a limited product catalog and minimal customization can be completed in ten to twelve weeks.
A complex migration from a legacy custom-built platform with extensive B2B functionality and multiple ERP integrations takes six months or more.
Factor Blue always creates a detailed schedule before the project begins so you know exactly what will be delivered and when.
02. What happens to my Google rankings during a migration?
A well-executed migration has minimal impact on your organic rankings. The key is comprehensive URL mapping: every existing URL is given a permanent redirect to the new URL on the Magento platform. In addition, we check metadata, structured data, the sitemap, and crawlability before going live.
03. Can I also migrate from Shopify to Magento?
Yes. Migrations from Shopify to Magento are a common process. Shopify offers export options for products, customers, and orders, which we use as the basis for the data migration.
The biggest challenge with Shopify migrations usually isn’t the data itself, but rather rebuilding functionality that was implemented via apps on Shopify: return modules, loyalty programs, subscriptions, and custom checkout logic. We take inventory of all apps in use and determine for each app what the Magento equivalent is—a standard module, a custom solution, or an integration with an external tool.
Typical turnaround time for a Shopify-to-Magento migration: three to four months.
04. Can I continue to sell on my current online store during the migration?
Yes. The migration to Magento takes place entirely in parallel with your current online store. The new platform is built and tested in a separate environment while your current online store remains fully accessible and continues to process orders.
The switchover takes place at the scheduled go-live time via a DNS change, which typically takes effect within a few minutes. The only data that still needs to be synchronized at that point are the orders and customer registrations that were received on the old platform in the very last hours before go-live.
05. Is Magento suitable for multiple online stores or international sales from a single system?
Yes, and that’s one of Magento’s strongest features compared to most other platforms.
Magento natively supports multiple stores, websites, and storefronts from a single installation. That means you can manage a B2C store and a B2B store, multiple brands, or multiple countries from the same Magento environment.
