WCAG audit for your online store

We conduct accessibility audits specifically for Magento online stores: both automated and manual, at the code and component levels. You’ll receive a detailed report with findings, prioritization, and recommended solutions.

//01 — What is a WCAG audit?

We test whether your online store is accessible.

WCAG stands for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, the international standard for digital accessibility. WCAG 2.2 Level AA is the legal standard that online stores must meet under the European Accessibility Act.

This standard sets requirements for color contrast, keyboard navigation, screen readers, form labels, error messages, alternative text for images, and dozens of other aspects of how a website functions for people with visual, motor, auditory, or cognitive disabilities.

A WCAG audit systematically tests your online store against all these criteria. This is done partly automatically using tools that detect known patterns and partly manually, because automated tools only catch about thirty percent of all accessibility issues. Manual testing using a screen reader, keyboard navigation, and visual inspection is essential for a complete picture.

Magento online stores have specific areas of concern. The standard Luma front end scores poorly on many WCAG criteria. Hyvä performs better but also has areas of concern. Extensions introduce their own components that are rarely tested for accessibility. Custom checkout logic, product configurators, and forms are the most common problem areas. A generic accessibility audit lacks the nuance that a Magento-specific audit provides.

Our work is supported by a strong network of technical partners, complemented by expertise in e-commerce and technology that we continuously develop and refine.

//02 — What does the audit cover?

Automated and manual

We provide a comprehensive overview of your Magento online store’s accessibility and help you implement the necessary improvements.

Automated analysis

We scan the online store using specialized tools that detect common WCAG violations: missing alt text, insufficient color contrast, missing form labels, incorrect heading structure, and more. The automated scan provides an initial overview of the most common issues and covers the technically detectable criteria.

Manual targeted testing

We manually test critical workflows: navigating the online store using only the keyboard, testing with a screen reader, evaluating error handling in forms and the checkout process, and verifying that interactive elements function correctly without a mouse. Manual testing identifies the issues that automated tools miss—and those make up the majority of the problems.

Magento Component Analysis

We assess Magento-specific components individually: the product page, the shopping cart, the checkout, the customer account, and the search functionality. We also review installed extensions and custom components for accessibility.

Prioritized report

You’ll receive a detailed report containing all findings, the corresponding WCAG criterion, the severity of the violation, and a concrete solution path. Findings are prioritized: what poses the greatest risk, what is relatively easy to fix, and what requires more technical work. Not an abstract report, but a working document.

Why choose Factor Blue for an accessibility audit?

Specialization

Not a general-purpose agency that dabbles in everything, but specialists who truly solve your complex challenges.

15 years of industry expertise

We know the ins and outs: large product catalogs, pricing and inventory logic for B2B and B2C, and data that has to be accurate. You don’t need to explain your market to us.

Direct communication, no interference

You’ll work directly with the developers. Honest feedback, clear agreements, and no surprises down the road.

Not just a time-billing agency, but a partnership

We help shape the roadmap, not just address today’s issues. Code that grows with your business instead of getting in your way later on.

//05 — Customer Feedback

Real customer experiences

Choosing a new technical partner isn’t something you do lightly. That’s why we let our clients and partners share their experiences working with us.

TELL US WHAT'S GOING ON

We’re the technical team that lies awake at night worrying about your uptime, your performance, and your next steps. Not as a contractor. Not as a supplier. But as the people who have just as much at stake in your success as you do.

You tell us what’s going on; we’ll tell you what we see.

//07 — Our Approach

How does an
accessibility audit work?

01.

Intake & Scope Definition

We start by assessing the online store: which pages, user flows, and components are present; which extensions are installed; and what front-end technology is used. Based on this, we determine the scope of the audit—which pages and user flows will be tested and in what order of priority.

02.

Automated scan

We run the automated analysis on all pages within the scope. This provides an initial overview of the most common issues and fully covers the technically detectable WCAG criteria.

03.

Manual testing

We manually test critical workflows: keyboard navigation, screen readers, form behavior, error handling, and interactive components. We test on multiple devices and with multiple assistive technologies to gain a realistic understanding of the user experience for people with disabilities.

04.

Report & Review

We prepare a report detailing all findings, prioritization, and proposed solutions. We review the report together so that you understand its contents and can ask questions about specific findings or the legal implications.

05.

Optional remediation

Based on the report, you can engage Factor Blue to implement the necessary fixes. We address the findings in order of priority, test after each round to ensure the fix actually resolves the issue, and deliver an updated audit report as proof of compliance.

//08 — Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions
WCAG Audits

Frequently Asked Questions. Can’t find your question here? We’d be happy to answer it personally.

01. Is my online store required to comply with the EAA and WCAG?

Yes, if you sell to EU consumers. The European Accessibility Act takes effect on June 28, 2025, and requires online stores that offer digital services to consumers in the EU to comply with WCAG 2.1 AA and, by 2026, with WCAG 2.2 AA.

The only exception applies to micro-enterprises: companies with fewer than ten employees and less than two million euros in annual revenue are exempt from this requirement. The ACM enforces compliance and may impose fines of up to €900,000 or one to ten percent of annual revenue.

A WCAG audit at Factor Blue for a Magento online store typically costs between €2,500 and €5,000, depending on the size of the online store, the number of pages and user flows to be tested, and the complexity of the extensions and custom components used.

You’ll always receive a fixed price based on the initial consultation—no open-ended pricing.

Hyvä scores better than the standard Luma front end on a number of WCAG criteria, particularly on performance-related aspects that indirectly affect accessibility.

However, Hyvä is not automatically WCAG-compliant. Alpine.js components that have not been implemented correctly lack ARIA attributes, focus management, and keyboard behavior. Extensions ported to Hyvä bring their own accessibility issues with them.

And custom components, such as product configurators or advanced filter logic, require specific attention. A Hyvä online store needs an audit just as much as a standard online store—the issues are simply of a different nature.

Magento online stores consistently exhibit a number of recurring issues in accessibility audits.

Insufficient color contrast between text and background is by far the most common violation, both on product pages and in buttons and form fields.

Forms without correctly linked labels are a second common problem: search fields, filter options, and checkout forms often lack visible or programmatically correct labels, preventing screen readers from announcing them.

Images without alt text or with generic alt texts such as “image1.jpg” appear in product photos and banners.

Keyboard navigation through the checkout and shopping cart is incomplete on many Magento online stores: not all interactive elements are accessible without a mouse. And for online stores with product configurators or extensive filter functionality, the ARIA attributes that make dynamic content accessible to assistive technologies are often missing.

A one-time audit provides a snapshot of the online store’s status at the time of testing. As soon as new functionality is added, extensions are updated, or the theme is modified, new accessibility issues may arise.

Compliance is therefore not a one-time goal but an ongoing priority. For organizations that are actively developing their platforms, we recommend incorporating accessibility into the regular development process.
