Hyvä in Finnish means “Good”. We would say it is more than good, it is rather great! Hyvä Themes is the best alternative for the Luma Magento theme. It’s a set of tools to create a great frontend experience for Magento 2, without hundreds of individual JavaScript files and outsized libraries. The environment is simpler because Magento is stripped of a great chunk of its codebase, also the theme is a complete rebuild. At its core, Hyvä is built with minimum dependencies – TailwindCSS and AlpineJS, which simplifies the frontend. Straight away, Hyvä Themes delivers impressive scores of up to 100 out of 100 across all of Google’s core web vitals, both on desktop and mobile.
This is all thanks to the fact that Hyvä is built with the latest technologies, and correspondingly ensures an exceptionally lightweight and, consequently, speedy storefront experience. Even on less powerful mobile devices in areas with poor signal strength, such as slow internet connections, Hyvä continues to perform exceptionally well. With Hyvä the frontend is still connected with the Magento backend. It is not headless, to put it another way, and we are able to use the default functionality of the powerful Magento platform more easily.

As a result, with Hyvä installed, the initial page load is already below 1 second. Moreover, with the correct optimization, it is possible to reduce page load time to 500 milliseconds. Ultimately, this means better SEO scores, lower bounce rates and improved conversions.
Magento extension compatibility

Downsides to Hyvä Themes
Certainly, Hyvä Themes is undeniably reshaping the Magento eCommerce ecosystem. However, nothing is perfect, not even Hyvä. Here is the list you need to be aware of:
- Compatibility with Magento Versions: It is quite simple – in order to be able to use Hyvä Themes, Magento version needs to be 2.4 or greater.
- No Support for Third-Party Extensions: Out of the box, not all third-party extensions work with Hyvä Themes, and some may require adjustments by a developer.
- Checkout: While Hyvä Themes doesn’t include a new Magento checkout, they offer several checkout solutions compatible with the framework. Additionally, the Hyvä Themes team is developing two alternative checkout solutions.
